ABOUT US
The Ohio County Solid Waste Authority exists as a public agency created by the West Virginia Legislature in 1989. At that time, the Legislature found that "uncontrolled, inadequately controlled and improper collection and disposal of solid waste" poses a clear and present danger to people, wildlife, and the environment. Now, OCSWA and its fifty sister organizations exist to divert recycling, household hazardous waste, and tires from landfills.
Our organization is governed by a five-member board. Each member is appointed by separate organizations. One (1) member from the W.Va. Public Service Commission, one (1) member from the W.Va. Department of Environmental Protection, one (1) member from the W.Va. Conservation Agency's Northern Panhandle District, and two (2) members from the Ohio County Commission. Board members serve four year terms without compensation.
In fall 2021, the organization rapidly transformed into a reliable place for the region's citizens to recycle their plastics #1, #2, #5, and filmy plastic, cardboard / paper, metal, and more. OCSWA also offers educational programming at schools and community events, volunteer opportunities, litter walks, and a yearly Earth Day festival.
